LocAle
CAMRA LocAle is a new accreditation scheme to promote pubs that sell locally-brewed real ale.
What are the objectives of LocAle?
- To improve consumer choice due to more locally brewed real ales being available in pubs
- To help local brewers sell more real ale allowing them to expand, benefiting the local economy and real ale choice
- To reduce "beer miles" resulting in less road congestion and pollution
- To increase tourism as successful local brewers give the area greater distinctiveness and therefore tourist appeal
- To help pubs to thrive due to the wider availability of local real ales in pubs boosting the number of pub visits
In short CAMRA LocAle is about consumer choice, local jobs, supporting a sustainable environment, creating local distinctiveness and promoting local pubs.
Which are locally-brewed real ales?
Whether a given real ale qualifies as locally-brewed is determined by the distance from the pub to the brewery. The Coventry & District branch has chosen a distance of 30 miles.
Which pubs will be accredited?
A pub will be accredited when the Coventry & District branch has established that a pub consistently serves well-kept real ale (by being in our branch online pub guide) and that at least one locally-brewed real ale is on sale at all times.

How to find out if a pub is accredited?

Accredited pubs will have a distinctive sticker in the window and perhaps posters on the wall and will use pump clip crowners to help identify the local brews on sale.
Updates to the list of accredited pubs will appear in future editions of PintSides.

Now closed on a Monday. Quite a unique pub, rebuilt by the landlord from the shell of the former Leigh Mills gatehouse. The pub is very sport-orientated with stained glass windows depicting the rugby six nations. It's also the pre-game meeting point for Coventry City London Supporters Club! The garden is the largest within the city centre. Serving a changing range of up to seven real ales, it is popular with shoppers and city-centre workers during the day and hosts a mixed crowd in the evenings.

A lucky surviver of the blitz, this is one of Coventry's finest Medeival buildings in the cobbled steets close to the old and new cathedrals. Built in 1583 on the site of the former Coventry mint, established as a pub around 1661 and recently sympathetically refurbished 2016-17. A comfortable lounge downstairs is supplemented by more formal dining upstairs at busy times, typically Friday to Sunday, which includes a bar. An excellent menu is available every day of the week, supplemented by a snack menu 12-3 Monday to Friday. The pub caters for those with gluten and other food intolerances, ask at the bar when ordering. Live bands play upstairs every Saturday from 9pm and the open mic downstairs Tuesdays from 8pm can be rather loud.

This busy community pub is situated in the historic watch-making area. It is one of the few free houses in Coventry and a strong supporter of local breweries. There are separate bar and lounge areas, and a paved patio with seating at the front that is popular in the summer months with impressive floral displays a feature. The landlord's Irish roots are evident throughout the pub, with traditional Irish music every Tuesday evening. Good value cobs.

Under the same management as the award-winning Old Windmill pub in Coventry City Centre. This popular 17th Century pub in the heart of Allesley Village is popular with locals and visitors alike. The single bar area has an adjacent section with flat screen TV for sporting events. Also, it has a separate lounge/dining room and tucked away by the back door you will find a tiny snug. Just outside to the rear is a small patio area and a garden area beyond the car park. Evidence of the long-gone Rainbow brewery can still be seen on the outside of the old stable block. Please note car access is narrow both on entry and exit. Also both the front and rear entrances to the pub involve steps.

An expanded brewery and tap house within the popular Fargo Village. The beer range and opening hours have both increased. There are now two handpumps, and - crucially - more toilets have been installed! Well worth a visit. As well as the handpumps, there are many keg fonts that dispense a vast range of keycask real ale brewed on the premises. No finings are used which makes the beer suitable for vegans though this lack of finings is inclined to make the beer cloudy. Visit the website for details of numerous events and additional opening hours, which include "tap takeovers".
